Using pixelpaint to create a simple animated sequence of scrolling stars and a spaceship, and then compositing them into an animated gif with imagemagick composite and convert.
I and James Britt added lots of features since youtube.com/watch?v=uTog_MlFZtk, animation being the biggest change. Here is the GPL Processing/java source code: github.com/lucasw/pixelpaint
