Google gives the Pixel 11 Pro Fold an IP68 rating—but what happens when extremely fine dust reaches its folding hinge?
We put the phone through an intentionally aggressive fluorescent-powder test, repeatedly folded it, and listened as the hinge began to crackle. Then we tore the device down to find out where the dust went, what stayed protected, and whether Google’s gearless hinge lived up to its durability claims.
Inside, we examine the dual-battery layout, Tensor G6 processor, MediaTek M90 modem, cameras, vapor chamber, folding OLED, repairability, and the complicated hinge geometry that allows the phone to fold nearly flat. We also compare its performance with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and explain the important nuance behind the Pixel’s IP68 rating.
The results are mixed: the sensitive electronics remained impressively clean, but plenty of fine powder still entered the hinge. There are also some encouraging repair decisions—alongside an awkward battery-removal system and a USB-C port soldered directly to the mainboard.
Final provisional repairability score: 4/10.
This fluorescent-powder challenge is not an official IP certification test. It was deliberately designed as an aggressive real-world durability experiment.
