IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFO:

To be certain that this is reliable, you have to make sure that nothing in your loaded chunks is updating pistons in a different orientation. This means, you can't have mobs inside extended piston heads which face a different direction than your piston bolt, or any other entities. You can also have NO piston extended in a different direcion in the same chunk as the piston bolt rail. If you simply cannot find the source why it's not reliable, you can, instead of using the mechanism I showed, fire an arrow into an extended piston of the correct orientation. Arrow updating overpowers all other types of updates. You can simply use a dispenser which fires an arrow into the piston. And even though arrows despawn after 1 minute, you don't have to worry about the arrow still being stuck there if you want to go the other way: the last arrow which was fired overrides the update of the arrow before. And please make sure you are in Minecraft 1.8.6 or above.

BUT (potential isssues): The problem I have with testing these designs is that I have a very, very good computer. I now used this in a build of mine and it did not work reliably. This was due to a huge amount of redstone on a pretty fast clock (in the end, tons of redstone was turning on and off every tick) togther with a ton of instantwire being triggered. This causes huge amounts of lag. This type of lag can cause it to fail apparently (though only in big amounts), latency issues are no problem as you are sitting in a minecart. But if you can, do build a test version in creative first to see if your computer is fine with it (it really should be). The problem on servers is that the amount of strain depends on how many players are online, you will have to make the decision if it's worth it, if your server is powerful and consistent enough, it will be absolutely no problem either. But please, do tests!

Yes, test137E29 came up with the first of these types of designs, which were diagonal. But I did not come up with this with test's designs in mind, I was trying all sorts of wild stuff when I realised that this may work if you use curved rails. If you're only gonna build this one way, you have a few options for the minecart management: keep it in inventory, hopper line back, water on ice line back, instant dropper line back (go check test's channel for that!)
