It took me 2 months to get this take!!! Probably the most difficult cover I've ever recorded, but I was extremely fortunate to land a miracle take. Never have I had so many recording attempts with any piece of music. If any of you are curious this arrangement is probably at the peak of my skill level, and if I ever want to play a showstopper for a crowd, friends, some girl I was trying to impress, etc. this was my go to! It's funny though how exposed you feel from the visual MIDI/Synthesia point of view versus the vantage point of seeing shots of someone playing piano. Initially I saw so many mistakes I was making through the MIDI data that I couldn't hear from audio recording alone. There are still PLENTY of minor mistakes, believe me! But unless you are incredibly familiar with or have learned the arrangement I doubt you will pick up on them.
I started learning this piece about 8 years ago when I was going to school at BYU. While I "learned it", I never got it up to performance ready. In fact I still probably don't have it performance ready, but that's the magic of YouTube in that you get to see my best attempt out of hundreds or thousands of tries, if not more! I just happened to land a winner:D
My father always asks me to play this piece, so for his birthday (which is in a few days from now) I'm uploading this cover for him. Happy Birthday Dad!
Also note that due to the nature of the piece I cleaned up a large about of phantom notes -- MIDI that registered on my piano but you can't hear (but aren't necessarily played). I don't know if my keyboard is overly sensitive to the keying action, but regardless I made the video more aesthetically pleasing to watch and easier for those who use and learn off of my MIDI. Professionals would still experience a good amount of these and naturally brush against the keys without the hammer sounding on the string. I should've kept the original for show but I no longer have it. And full disclosure there is one note I squeaked a half-step higher (my finger barely didn't reach as far as I hoped); I didn't want one sour spot to ruin an amazing take requiring me to try for another few months to get a similar one. Let me know if you can find it but I doubt you will:)
