CargoKite is a deep-tech maritime startup based in Munich, Germany, developing a new class of wind-powered, autonomous cargo vessels designed to radically transform ocean freight transportation. Rather than relying on traditional fossil fuels, CargoKite’s vessels harness clean wind energy as the primary source of propulsion, enabling truly emission-free operation.
At the core of CargoKite’s innovation is an advanced airborne wind energy system (AWE) — essentially a large, computer-controlled kite that flies at altitudes of up to around 300 meters where winds are significantly stronger and more consistent than near the sea surface. By harvesting these high-altitude winds, the system can generate propulsion power without consuming fuel, resulting in substantial reductions in carbon emissions and operating costs compared with conventional ships.
CargoKite’s vessels are being designed as micro cargo ships, offering flexible, point-to-point connections between even small and underserved ports without the need for fuel-based infrastructure. This approach is intended to unlock previously inaccessible routes, reduce overall supply chain time, and support more responsive and just-in-time logistics services.
