Keeper1st | Pioneer Space Sim head tracking demonstration and setup @Keeper1st | Uploaded February 2019 | Updated October 2024, 4 days ago.
Just a little demonstration of how I got head tracking in the open-source game Pioneer Space Sim. It's a bit of a kludge but functional. Hopefully there is a way to make mouse-look movements as smooth as axis-based movements (which only work in external views but also are control inputs rather than absolute position adjustments, so not suitable for head tracking).
The whole idea started when I adjusted the FOV in the game to give things a realistic scale appearance. I didn't like that the default FOV made it easier to see everything around your ship at the expense of zooming out so much that you couldn't even see the Sun or Moon from the Earth. A new custom FOV resulted in a better appearance for things, but with such huge blindspots that sometimes I couldn't even find a planet I was orbiting from any of the available views. Rather than wasting fuel to turn the ship around until I could see something, it would be much nicer to be able to turn my head without reaching for the mouse every time.
