The pine sol air freshener has been a great idea for a fresh scent and a great bug deterrent, too. The pine sol does freeze but does not crack the Mason jar . As for the sponge it's purpose to prevent the jar from cracking or increased scent I'm not sure of . I'm thinking the sponge is more decorative than anything else . Cheers.
