This is an unusual filter which is described as either being 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 but there appears to be no difference between the 'different' filters - I have no idea what the other function (3) is or does so if anyone has experience of the mythical 3rd function of this filter I'm all ears....

While this is an internal filter (which I'm generally not a fan of) it does hold a reasonable amount of biological filter media when upgraded so is a good choice since most of the internal filters available now rely solely on replaceable cartridges.

As long as you avoid using damaging water conditioners which starve the bacteria in the system by messing with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate (e.g. Prime) there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to achieve a full cycle (0-5ppm nitrate) when your filter is properly sized and set up well with suitable filter media.
