It all began in 1912, when a British archeologist named Charles Dawson wrote to London's Natural History Museum claiming to have discovered the missing evolutionary link between apes and humans in a fossil he had dug up in Piltdown, Sussex. It was given the scientific name Eoanthropus dawsoni, which roughly translated as Dawson’s Dawn Ape. It was also known by many as the Piltdown Man.
