Every pilot learns the skill to fly an “inspection pass” or “precautionary landing”.
It’s not something I find myself needing to use very often, but for several reasons on this flight it was definitely called for. Not necessarily to assess the runway condition as I was confident Ed (@barenakedpilot) keeps it in great shape, and he was on the ground to inspect before I arrived. But in this case the approach is challenging due to the hill and tall trees… To fly the appropriate profile, you’ll find yourself low in terms of height above ground on the base to final turn, so part of the impetus for the inspection pass was to see what my energy state would be over the fence. Being a less than ideal weather day, I also wanted to feel the wind below the tree line, before I committed to land.
