Welcome aboard! This series features videos shot by the dashcam of my car, as I show you around the real China at street level. In this episode, I invite y'all to venture into an average Chinese village with the most wondrous history in that country—the Village of Donglü. In 1900, Our Lady appeared on top of the church in this village, where defenceless Catholics gathered and prayed the Holy Rosary for protection during the Boxer War (1899-1900). Our Lady—Mother of God—appeared as a Woman in white and scared off the offending Chinese soldiers and boxers. The Catholic church in Donglü today is one of the most prominent Marian pilgrimage sites in China. After the pilgrimage, we will be driving to Beijing through rural pathways, super highways, and police checkpoints. You can witness the change of scenery from rustic and impoverished Hebei to its more urbanised and affluent neighbouring region of Beijing.
