After seeing a YouTube video by coolbluelights, I thought of uploading this. Taken some years before YouTube would be in existance. This was an uncommon sight to see birds like these in our neighborhood in Dutchess County, NY. They were across the road "hopping" around a tree. As you can see, it was snowing outside in the month of February.
The scan of the book at the start of this video didn't turn out right. :-P

Here's the description of the Pileated Woodpecker according to "Birds of North America":
Uncommon and local; a wary bird of extensive deciduous or mixed forests. Solid black back distinguishes it from other large birds except crows and some hawks. It is conspicuously crested in all plumages. Flight is strong with irregular flaps of wings. Drumming is distinctive, loud, slow, softer at end. Call is a series, never single.
