Did you know one of the reds in your paintbox might also be in your strawberry yoghurt? For centuries, the colours used in paintings were also used to make food look more appetising. Though some ancient colours like Carmine, a red dye produced from crushed cochineal insects, are still used in dying food today, others such as Emerald Green and Red Lead had deadly consequences which led to the introduction of food regulation laws.
