Cutia, also known as the agouti—a native rodent of Central and South America. It’s known for its sleek body, reddish-brown fur, and rabbit-like posture, often seen sitting upright while nibbling on fruit.
These rodents belong to the genus Dasyprocta and are commonly found in tropical forests. In Brazil, they’re called cutia, and they play a vital ecological role as seed dispersers, especially for large-seeded fruits like Brazil nuts. Unlike true mice, agoutis are relatively large—some species can weigh up to 4 kg (9 lbs)—and they have strong hind legs adapted for quick bursts of running.
