You may find it interesting that Once Upon a Time was first sung by Ray Bolger, yes, The Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, in the Broadway flop All American (1962) (youtube.com/watch?v=OGEzfP0XTx0) with music by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, the authors of Bye Bye Birdie, Golden Boy and Applause. Strouse also wrote Annie with Martin Charnin.
Given the talent of Strouse and Adams, how could this happen? Well, the book was by Mel Brooks and the plot was ludicrous. All American (musical) - Wikipedia
The Broadway musical also had the rarely heard verse where the woman/girl sings to the man/boy. It was sung by Eileen Herlie. This recording is the only time I have ever heard the girl/woman verse. It seems to lack the lyricism and poignancy of the man/boy version.
It was actually Tony Bennett who rescued the song from total obscurity, followed by all the male vocalists of the era, Perry Como, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin, and the list goes on. Maureen McGovern offers a great version as well, singing the standard lyrics with “girl” replaced by ”boy.” youtube.com/watch?v=-lGNO5rCdM
