Today is my mother's memorial day. Strange how it can seem both like a really long time and yet as if it was only recently. My mother was a concert pianist, but she started her career at age 6, as her mother's accompanist. Her mother was a cabaret singer. Here my mother and I performed on a TV show - a comedic patter-song about a young girl's resentment towards her mother's insistence on piano practice, which prevents her from playing and pursuing her dream of becoming a soprano. Today, I wish I had listened to my mother more, and practiced the piano like she wanted me to.
As an aside: at this performance I had a sever sore throat for a week. My mother took me to a throat specialist before the show, to see if she could give me a magic remedy to hold me off for the duration of the performance. I remember singing really hurt during this performance, but I knew better than to let it show: after all, I am 3rd generation stage-performer! I'm grateful to the wonderful mother I had. A short time with her is worth way more than a lifetime with another.
