“Debbie Doom Scroller” is a caffeinated garage-punk detonation that sounds like early Elvis Costello & the Attractions if someone spiked the tea, handed them a cracked smartphone, and dared them to write a love song during the apocalypse. It’s got the nervous twitch of Buzzcocks, the street-corner snap of The Jam, and the unhinged grin of The Damned kicking over the evening news desk.
Debbie’s kinda cute. Debbie’s kinda shy. Debbie hasn’t left the bedroom since the algorithm learned her name. A thousand networks drip-feed her dread while talking heads shout from inside the glass. She walks around with a screen in her hand and her head in the sand — romance in the age of blue light and bad headlines.
But this isn’t a think piece. It’s a jailbreak with downstrokes.
The guitars slash. The rhythm section stomps like it’s chasing the 1979 tour van. Cook doesn’t croon — he pounces. “Lose the news!” he barks, and suddenly the band shifts into overdrive like someone just pulled the plug on the end times. It’s satire with spit on its lip. It’s affection wrapped in distortion. It’s punk rock trying to rescue a girl from her own push notifications.
When the chorus hits — “Our little show, yeah it’s good news time” — it doesn’t wink. It grabs you by the collar and drags you outside. Because maybe the real rebellion in 2026 isn’t anarchy. Maybe it’s eye contact.
