The question I get asked more than anything else right now is whether doing a PhD is still a rational decision in 2026. Not just whether it's hard, but whether the investment of years, money, and mental effort actually makes sense given where academia is heading.
If you're seriously considering a PhD, or you're already a PhD student wondering if you made the right call, this video is for you. I've sat with this question for a long time, through my own doctorate, through multiple supervisors, and through years of watching both the academic system reward and quietly destroy people. The PhD advice I wish I had isn't about techniques or time management. It's the bigger picture: the funding crisis hitting research institutions right now, the gap between what grad school promises and what it actually delivers, and the one variable that almost nobody talks about openly.
I also get into what the data actually says about PhD careers. The gap between what PhD students hope for, a tenure-track position, a life in research, and what statistically happens is something the system has a vested interest in not advertising. Knowing how to get a PhD is the easy part. Knowing what to do with it, or whether the opportunity cost is worth it, is the conversation this video is really about.
What surprised me most putting this together was the contradiction in the data: despite all of it, the majority of PhD students report being satisfied. That tension is worth sitting with.
