Packaging touches every product we make and every consumer who buys it. Reducing that footprint means more than choosing a different material – it means redesigning the relationship between product, consumer, and supply chain. At P&G, that work begins in the Packaging Prototyping Lab, where ideas become mockups in hours and sustainability is engineered into every proposition from the start.

Featuring:

• Vanessa Catherine, Commercial Lead for Global Sustainability – P&G Global
• Inge De Backer, Corporate Communications Director – P&G Europe
• Benjamin Bollot, Packaging Expert – P&G Packaging Prototyping Lab

The Skip the Soak hand dish power sprayer is one such proposition. Built for 10,000 consistent actuations, its refillable recharge enables 25 to 30 refills – delivering the experience consumers expect while reducing the plastic they go through. That same logic extends to the retail shelf, where smart shelf placement and bundle packs help consumers make the connection between the reusable product and the refill sitting beside it. And where the Gillette and Venus teams shifted from plastic blisters to cardboard, they avoided more than 5,000 metric tons of plastic in the first three years of launch and inspired the wider industry to follow.

For e-commerce, ship-in product packaging takes that commitment further. Most Pampers packs reach consumers through Amazon without an outer box, and Braun products now come in packaging that is 30% more compact, made from FSC-certified fiber and cardboard. These formats protect products, cut excess material, and make delivery faster. On the road between sites, we load trucks like a Tetris game, map carbon hotspots with retail partners, invest in e-truck infrastructure and biofuels, and avoid empty miles – filling return trips rather than sending trucks back empty.

Across prototyping, production, retail, and logistics, every decision connects back to the same commitment: this is something we do every day, together. Vanessa is also exploring what comes next – a returnable and reusable packaging pilot with the Consumer Goods Forum coalition in Canada, where consumers will return bottles for washing, refilling, and re-shelving. These are real steps, taken by real people, because sustainability in real life means showing the people behind the commitments.
