One hundred years ago – on May 21, 1925 – the Jesuit Peter Canisius was canonized by Pope Pius XI and declared a Doctor of the Church. Since then, he has been considered the "Second Apostle of Germany." The saint's work as a preacher and theologian contributed significantly to the spread of the Jesuit order in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Canisius also played a central role in the Catholic Counter-Reformation by writing the first Catholic catechism after the Reformation, which shaped religious education for centuries.
In this interview, Professor Dr. Mathias Moosbrugger, historian and theologian at the University of Innsbruck, explains Canisius's historical significance for the Catholic Church and the Jesuit order in German-speaking countries.
