Peter Schäfer, "Introduction: Aleida Assmann"
Peter Schäfer, b. 1943, was recently the Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. Before this he taught Jewish Studies at the Universities of Tübingen, Cologne, Berlin and Princeton and (as Visiting Professor) at the Universities of Oxford, Jerusalem, Yale, at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, and at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He is a recipient of the Leibniz Prize, the Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award, the Howard T. Behrman Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Humanities, the Leopold-Lucas Prize, and the Reuchlin Prize. He holds honorary degrees of the Universities of Utrecht and Tel Aviv, and he is a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, a Foreign Member of the American Philosophical Society, a Fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research, and a Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was a Fellow at the Historisches Kolleg Munich, and at the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin.
