The Bobby Short interview was recorded on February 9, 1984 during Short’s engagement in the Venetian Room of the Hotel Fairmont, San Francisco. On the broadcast Peter Mintun presented early recordings of many black entertainers of the early 20th Century, including Eubie Blake & Noble Sissle (Bandana Days), Alberta Hunter with Thomas “Fats” Waller, pipe organ (Sugar), Buck & Bubble (Ford L. “Buck” Washington and John W. Sublett) (Breakfast in Harlem), Edith Wilson & Her Jazz Hounds (What Do You Care?), Clarence “Tandy” Johnstone and Turner Layton (Way Down Yonder in New Orleans), Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (Doin’ the New Low Down), Louis Armstrong (Ain’t Misbehavin’), Ethel Waters (I Can’t Give You Anything But Love), Josephine Baker (J’ai deux amours), Adelaide Hall, with Thomas “Fats” Waller (I Can’t Give You Anything But Love), Elisabeth Welch (Harlem in My Heart), Valaida Snow (Some of These Days), Leslie A. Hutchinson (Lights Out), Ivie Anderson with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra (Love is Like a Cigarette). In the KALW Studio Bobby Short plays and sings Noel Coward's “Sigh No More,” and plays a two-piano version of “Love is Like a Cigarette” with host Peter Mintun. Opening and closing theme: Music in My Fingers, played by Phil Ohman & Victor Arden and their Orchestra.
Peter Mintun’s Music in the Air was broadcast weekly from KALW-FM Radio (San Francisco) for 2 years. It aired Saturday evenings following Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. The producer was Betty de Losada and the engineer was David Fowler. The theme was mostly music of the 1920-s and ‘30s, with an occasional celebrity guest, such as Mary Martin, Wally Rose, Mike Lipskin, Frederick Hodges, Frank Denke, Jim Roseveare, Bruce Vermazen (Chrysanthemum Ragtime Band), Don Neely and Carla Normand (Royal Society Jazz Orchestra), Edna Fischer, Hokum W. Jeebs, Durelle Alexander, Tom Coakley, Philip Elwood, Kay Swift, Dana Suesse, Herb Caen and Bobby Short. KALW is a pioneer educational station licensed to the San Francisco Unified School District, broadcasting since December 1, 1941 – when it went on the air as the first FM signal west of Mississippi.
