Peruvian experts have identified 528 glacial lakes across the country at risk of overflowing, raising fresh concerns over the dangers posed by rapidly changing glacial landscapes.

The warning comes in the aftermath of a deadly glacial collapse in the Himalayas, highlighting how vulnerable communities in mountainous regions can be to sudden glacier-related disasters.

An overflowing glacial lake can trigger a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), sending huge volumes of water, debris and mud downstream with little warning.
