#Migraines are more than just headaches though often dismissed as such. Migraines are an important disorder where patients get a very severe #headache that's pounding and may incapacitate them. Very often they will also get a warning sign just before the headache starts, something called the aura, commonly in the form of flashing lights or zigzag lines.
The World Health Organisation (#WHO) ranks migraines as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. The Economic cost is estimated at over 27 billion euros per year from healthcare needs and loss of productivity.
Though it was known that migraines were a genetic disorder as they run in families, up until last year scientists didn't know what the genes were that cause migraines.
Zam has found the first gene to be directly linked with a typical form of migraine, which points the way to effective new treatments for the condition.
