“Knowledge alone is not sufficient; lifelong learning, innovation and adaptability are essential for the future.” That is the message from Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan to the youth of India. Speaking at a convocation ceremony, the Vice President urged young Indians to look beyond a system that is often defined by examinations and marks - and focus instead on independent thinking, creativity and social responsibility. His message to the young generation was clear: “Become creators rather than consumers of knowledge; innovators rather than imitators; leaders rather than followers.” And this message comes at an important moment for India’s youth. Just a day earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also put the spotlight on the young generation, calling upon them to step up, become agents of change and contribute to India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. Put these two messages together, and they leave us with a very important question: What does India need from its youth in a rapidly changing world - and what does the youth need to be ready for that responsibility? Because building a developed India is going to take more than degrees, marks and qualifications. It will take young people who are willing to question, explore, create, adapt — and lead. So, perhaps the larger question is: Are we preparing our young people simply to pass examinations - or to take on the challenges of the future? And what needs to change in the way we educate, empower and engage India’s young population?
