The "Personality and Place: New Perspectives on Person-Environment Links" symposium took place at SPSP's 16th Annual Convention in Long Beach, California. This presentation is the second of four presentations. The presentation is titled "Introverts Like Mountains" by Shigehiro Oishi of the University of Virginia.
In three studies, researchers tested whether there is a link between personality and one aspect of physical ecology: flatness versus mountainous-ness. They found that extroverts preferred the ocean over mountains. None of the other Big Five personality traits predicted it. Researchers also explored the types of situational factors that make people prefer the ocean or mountains. They found that when people want to socialize with others, they prefer the ocean far more than mountains. In contrast, when they want to be alone, they choose mountains as much as the ocean. In the final study, residents of mountainous states are more introverted than flat states. As predicted, the mean extraversion score of US states was lower in
