This stunning Napoleonic scenario from the Perrys brought the chaos and colour of the Peninsular War, circa 1808, to 2025’s Partizan wargaming show. While it’s not a specific historical battle, it captures the kind of desperate convoy defence that marked Spain’s resistance against Napoleon’s forces.
Alan Perry told us his inspiration for the battle came from Marshal Soult’s infamous looting of Spanish churches. A coalition of French and German state troops is on the attack, trying to grab the religious treasures that are being rushed to a defensive safe haven nearby.
The battle uses Jervis Johnson’s Valour & Fortitude rules, with a minor twist for the show: troops must assault occupied buildings. This is, in part, to allow Spanish guerrillas, deployed in various structures, to act as ‘speed bumps’ against the oncoming attack.
The game was presented in the classic Perry style: stunningly crafted in every way, well-researched, impressive in its scope and scale, and rich with historical flavour. One of the standouts at this year’s show, without any question.
