Perry Burdge was the son of Thomas Burdge and Elizabeth Winnings. He was born in Marion county Indiana. He was living with his Uncle Johathan and Aunt Margaret Winnings in the 1870 census. He grew to be 5 ft 11 inches tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light red hair. In December of 1877 he was sentenced to two years (along with his brother-in-laws Nathan Thorpe and William Fultz) in the Indiana State Prison North for horse stealing. He served his 2 years and was released from prison on Nov. 12, 1879. Before his sentencing, his occupation was that of a farmer. After his release from prison, he gained employment as a shoemaker in Marion county Indiana. Nine months later, Perry was once again convicted of burglary and grand larceny and was sentenced to three years in the Indiana State Prison North. His sentence started Aug. 17, 1880 but before he finished his term, he died on July 21, 1881. A brief item appeared in the Evening Dispatch, Michigan City, Ind. the following day Friday July 22, 1881: " A convict, whose name is unknown, killed himself by taking ground glass yesterday." It is unknown if the aforementioned convict was Perry Burdge but the dates do coincide. It is believed, but not confirmed, that Perry was buried in the Old Indiana State Prison Cemetery. There are no headstones or burial records for the old cemetery. Only a small triangular grassy area remains. Death records were not kept.
