Perfecting the 4% Rule With Michael Kitces' Ratcheting Withdrawals Strategy:
Most market environments that retirees will experience will not be nearly as bad as the Great Depression or the stagflationary 1970s on which the traditional 4% rule was based. Therefore, most retirees who follow the rule of thumb will leave a lot of money on the table. To correct for this we can periodically ratchet up our retirement withdrawals when certain conditions are met. Today we discuss one of my favorite variations on the 4% rule known as the Ratcheting Withdrawal strategy.
