So the internet thought my deck was WAY overbuilt.. and I agree. But at the time, nobody knew that I was planning on putting a 5,000 lb + Spa and a "screened in porch" on my deck. Hopefully, the 9 footings and the 4 beams makes more sense now - but it was still probably overkill.
During my research on the codes / requirements for deck framing that is going to support a hot tub, I was shocked at how little information there seemed to be on the topic. I was able to find one or two Youtube videos showing how other people did it... but it definitely seemed a bit "DIY". Basically, the just added 3-4 concrete blocks and few 4x4's under that area of the deck. And who knows, maybe that is enough.
Even though it was a lot of extra work and lumber to build my deck like this, I can rest easy knowing that it is not going anywhere!
As for the privacy and mosquito issue, I knew that I had to install some kind of screened in porch area. As mentioned in the video, I initially planned to build a wooden pergola from scratch and then wrap it with screening. But I think that would have looked super "DIY" and it may have even been an eyesore. BUT it would have been cheap!
Instead, I opted to go with a pre-fab pergola from Mirador since it has the screen accessories that are going to solve both my privacy issue and my mosquito issue at the same time. Overall, I think it looks really good but I don't like how it "sections off" the deck. It's almost like the deck is 2 decks... one small one that is outside the pergola and another small one inside the pergola... maybe I am overthinking it.
Thankfully, my deck is ALMOST done. I still have one more deck project that I am super excited to show you guys soon!
