Shantelle is a proud Nguuku of the Barkindji and Ngiyampaa peoples, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, and founder of an organisation for young Indigenous people in regional Victoria. The mother of six says that First Nations people are too often forced to focus on their trauma in order to get support.
“People are comfortable with us in our trauma narrative … When you're applying for grants, how deep is the deficit and how deep is the gap for you to overcome to justify how much you're applying for in funding?”
