The Pentagon on Thursday pressed US allies at NATO to prove they are stepping up their defense of Europe as the United States shifts its attention to security challenges closer to home and in the Asia-Pacific region.
US Under Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby hails the "progress" made with NATO allies over the past few years in terms of stepping up to take more responsibility for Europe's defence.
But he warns there are still things "to work out to make sense going forward" as Washington reviews its forces on the continent.
After a briefing at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday, Colby praised Germany, Poland and Scandinavian countries for their efforts.
The United States has already begun reducing its military presence in Europe, where about 80,000 troops remain, and is reviewing how far further cuts should go.
A strong US presence is seen as key to NATO’s ability to deter adversaries such as Russia, but future cuts will depend on how effectively European allies and Canada respond to Washington’s demand for an overhaul of the alliance.
