These gentoo penguins are swimming in a manner termed "porpoising." It is believed the penguins leap out of the water to allow for consistent breathing while swimming and also to confuse potential predators. It is also thought the birds porpoise in order to help them navigate and see where they are going.
These gentoos are returning from a day of fishing out at sea and it happens to be during particularly stormy weather. The penguins don't mind, however, and just keep swimming like they always do.
