With Hurricane Milton bearing down on the U.S. Gulf Coast, staff at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa began moving its community of nine African penguins from their usual habitat on the first floor to higher ground on Tuesday, safe from any potential storm surges.
The aquarium described the move as an essential step to protect the animals in the event of severe flooding.
Staff used fish treats to encourage the diminutive flightless birds into carry cases before taking them to their temporary accommodation upstairs.
The southeastern U.S. state of Florida braced Wednesday for the arrival of powerful Hurricane Milton amid warnings of heavy rains, strong winds and life-threatening storm surge.
Forecasters said the center of the storm was expected to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday along Florida’s west-central coast. That region includes Tampa Bay, a city of 3.3 million people that has not taken a direct hit from a hurricane since 1921.
