When Trump says “I’m being indicted for you” and “I’m the only one who can save this nation” and “they’re not after you, they’re after me, I’m just in the way” he’s playing to his evangelical base by hijacking theological language about “Jesus being punished in our place”. But that interpretation of the crucifixion is only about 500 years old and is the worst of the worst of theological language in church history.
