“I began feeling trippy around 7 pm when I lost my mucus plug. I was in total denial about it being real labor, but also totally knew I’d be giving birth. I prepared my bed, which hinted to my husband it might be soon. At no point did I worry about it only being 36 weeks… I felt complete, and I may have had my “due date” wrong. My waters began to leak while I was lying in bed around 11 pm and then I later got into my bathtub. Husband woke up and supported me beautifully (even though we really didn’t ever talk about what I wanted/didn’t want from him. I had planned a big talk about freebirth and my wishes, but never ended up having the talk). I did not give him enough credit in my pregnancy in his innate ability to hold space for me.
Labor sensations continued with really no pain. My body took over and ejected my baby around 4:30 am. I got in bed, and my placenta came 45 minutes later. Andy went to work the next morning, and my village sisters came over and cooked, cleaned, and cared for me since I had nothing prepared! Postpartum was blissful. I stayed in bed for 2 weeks. I healed a tear easily. Breastfeeding was so easy (this never came easily for me before).
Something I think is interesting is that a huge maternal switch happened. I ended up closing my business so I could be with him and to exclusively breastfeed. I also found myself wanting to be a more present mom for my older kids. I felt the calling (and was also encouraged by my village prenatal sisters) to join MMI. I applied for the grant and figured if I got it, I would take it as a sign and figure it out!”
