Payment channels are live on Solana: 1 million payments per second, settled in a single transaction.
AI agents pay for things constantly. Every inference call, every API request, every tool invocation. Paying for each one individually means a human approving every charge, settlement costs stacking up across millions of transactions, and most teams giving up and handing funds to a custodian.
Payment channels fix that. You authorize a spending limit once. The agent spends against it. Everything meters off-chain with signed messages, and the actual amount consumed settles onchain in one transaction. Unused funds go back to you. Nobody else ever holds the money.
In testing, payment channels processed 1 million payments per second across 100,000 wallets. That works out to more than 80 billion payments a day at roughly $0.000000000776 each.
Payment channels support x402 upto, x402 batch-settlement, and MPP session specs, so they slot into what teams are already building. Alibaba Cloud is live with them today on inference API endpoints.
