If you're just joining us, these are those hostage movers that load the truck up with your stuff, and then tell you it's another $10,000+ if you ever want to see your stuff again. The police can't help b/c the contract makes it "a civil issue." And if you haven't done your homework, you don't know you've hired hostage movers. These scumbags are who we got handed off to by a broker, who was posing as a moving company. Once these guys show up, the other company is done with you. You meet the new scumbags the day you're moving. (Make sure if you're hiring someone, that you verify they are NOT a broker. Check BBB to see reviews. Mia and I recommend PODS, which sadly were not available in the area this cargo was shipped from).
This was honestly the best way it could have ended, given the situation. We needed something like this to happen to have any chance of going after these guys later. Had we just handed them cash and the evening was otherwise uneventful, that would have been that. The police can't force them to unload the truck or return the money due to the contract. That makes all of this a "civil matter." We'd have to go to court. Going to court is not an option for a good variety of reasons. The property damage was criminal. That is something the police can handle. Also, I filmed a lot of good things that night, that will hopefully be useful later. After all that, they still left in the truck that night, with the cash (minus the $600 they had to pay the tow truck guy). But, hopefully this isn't over. We still have people to talk to and meet with.
