Paul Whiteman And His Orchestra play "Lonely Melody", an adaptation by Australian-born composer Hal Dyson of "Kleine Serenade" ("Little Serenade"), a song by the Austrian pianist and composer Alfred Grünfeld (1852-1924).
Arranged by Bill Challis, two takes of "Lonely Melody" were issued on 78. This is take 3, a "hold indefinitely" take that wasn't released until July 1936, when it was issued as part of Victor's P-4 album of 78s dedicated to the memory of Bix Beiderbecke. The original take of "Lonely Melody" is take 1, issued in March 1928. Bix plays a lovely two-part solo (16 + 8 bars) on both takes, with a poignant, reflective quality. Steve Brown is great here too, slapping his bass when Bix solos and propelling the band along for the rest of the record.
