Paul Whiteman And His Orchestra play "Changes" (take 2), featuring a great muted cornet solo by Bix Beiderbecke. Take 3, which I uploaded on YouTube a few years ago, was originally issued in January 1928. Take 2 wasn't released until July 1936, when it was issued as part of Victor's P-4 album of 78s, dedicated to the memory of Bix.
As well as Bix's straight mute cornet solo, the side also features Steve Brown's excellent string bass playing. He bows the bass until the vocals, when he then starts to slap it in his own inimitable style, continuing to do so under Bix's solo and onwards until the end of the record.
