Patricia Merritt Whatley, the founder of the Tajiri Arts School and Museum in Sanford, Florida, speaks at a history harvest event at Hopper Academy in the Georgetown neighborhood in Sanford.

Created in 1988, the Tajiri Arts School and Museum offered students after school education for program teaching performing arts, STEM, etiquette and much more. The school was open for 20 years and reached national acclamation before closing their doors.

Though the school is no longer open, the legacy left remains.

The Feb. 8 event at Historic Hopper Academy was filled with teachers, students and other community members who were impacted by the school.
