The UWaterloo Balinese Gamelan is offered as a World Music Ensemble Course in the Department of Music. Comprising students, graduates, instructors, and community members from the University of Waterloo, and Kitchener-Waterloo region, the ensemble plays traditional and contemporary music on gamelan semara dana. Since starting in 2013, the ensemble has performed in K-W and beyond, including the UWaterloo Noon Hour Concert Series, Bestival, conference events, public schools, and participated in church services. With artist-in-residence I Dewa Made Suparta, the UWaterloo Gamelan has expanded its traditional repertoire to include contemporary compositions, new arrangements of traditional pieces, and music collaborations.
