http://www.nikhef.nl/en The FOM Institute for subatomic physics Nikhef carries out research in the field of particle and astroparticle physics. The institute participates in three of the four big experiments (ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE) at the LHC particle accelerator at CERN and played a major role in the discovery of the Higgs particle. Other international research projects are for example the ANTARES neutrino detector, the VIRGO experiment for measuring gravitional waves and XENON1T for detecting dark matter.
Nikhef is a partnership between the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) and four universities: Radboud University Nijmegen, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University and VU University Amsterdam.
The scientific staff numbers some 160 physicists (60 permanent staff and 100 PhDs and postdocs). The departments of Mechanical technology, Electronics technology and Computer technology provide the necessary technical support. These departments employ about 100 staff. Nikhef is located at Science Park Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
