Parrot uses his broken beak to become a dominant male
Bruce is a wild-born New Zealand kea who lost the top half of his beak in an accident as a juvenile.Despite the severe injury, he invented his own ways to survive - using pebbles to preen, pressing food against hard surfaces to eat, and adapting almost every behaviour other kea rely on their beaks for.
When he joined a captive group, researchers expected him to be low‑ranking due to his disability. Instead, he climbed to the very top of the hierarchy.
His dominance wasn’t due to aggression or physical strength. It was purely behavioural innovation, making him the first known severely injured animal to become an alpha this way. Researchers also found that Bruce had the lowest stress hormone levels of all the males, suggesting he wasn’t struggling to maintain his status, he was thriving
