Video from the scene shows the memorial's usually clear fountains completely filled with massive mounds of soap bubbles. Along with the bubbles, vandals defaced the pavilion and the inner sides of the fountain with pink, green, and neon orange graffiti, including phrases reading "CLEAN HANDS" and "DIRTY" followed by a dollar sign. The Interior Department has condemned the act as an "utter disgrace," while the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) released a statement demanding accountability and a swift restoration of the site. The National World War II Memorial honors the more than 400,000 American service members who gave their lives during the conflict.
