Part 4: Child

Ao Lie was the best of them. All four of the other pilgrims knew that. Barley 17 he was the kindest, most forgiving, and the one who kept them all together.

He didn’t even need to go on the journey.

When he was 16, Ao Lie lost control of his powers, and set his fathers castle on fire.

A small transgression, but his demon father wasn’t exactly fond of his weak, soft, son. He used this as an opportunity to demand he be executed.

Furious, Ao Lie’s only sister pleaded to Guanyin for help, knowing that if a Bodhisattva partitioned for her brother, her father couldn’t do a thing.

The Goddess took one look at the child and commanded his father to pardon him. Then she arranged for Ao Lie to move in with his uncle.

The Goddess thought little of it. She helped demons all the time. But that night Ao Lie came to her door.

“Please let me serve you.” He begged. “You saved my life, and I’m not useful anywhere else. Let me do anything you want.”

She smiled sadly, and commanded him to stand. “You don’t need to be useful, my child.”

“But I want to help people! Just like you!”

He was so earnest, it almost broke her heart. But still, Guanyin sent the young dragon demon back home, commanding him just to rest.

Only about two months later did the Journey to the West start, and Guanyin very quickly realized it was going poorly.

Sun Wukong and Tang Sanzang both had… lackluster people skills, and very strong personalities. As much as they wanted to help people, they were stubborn, and fought day after day.

A few Weeks passed and Guanyin realized this wasn’t going to work. The monkey king and monk had to be willing to learn from each other, to be flexible, or they wouldn’t get anywhere.

They needed an intermediary.
This reminded
Guanyin of Ao Lie, the innocent, young, earnest dragon demon that just wanted to help.

Was he still interested?

She paid a visit to his uncle's home, only to discover it was his birthday. The kind young spirit was turning 17, and apparently Guanyin asking for help was the best birthday gift he could ask for.

She told him that his calm personality and kind demeanor would be perfect for aiding Tang Sanzang on his journey, which is why she chose him.

She didn’t tell him the truth; That both Tang Sanzang and Sun Wukong wanted to protect others. It was the one thing they could agree on; helping the innocent and helpless.

Guanyin knew many even tempered and kind spirits, but Ao Lie was different from them. He wasn’t a fighter, he was just a kid.

Just someone they could keep safe and save.

And it worked. It worked better than she could have hoped. Even as more joined, Ao Lie kept the group together, his even temperament and lack of anger the key to soothe any ruffled tempers.

It worked.

Until it didn’t.

If Guanyin knew what would have happened she would have never brought Ao Lie into the journey. Would have never been put in harm's way.

He didn’t deserve what happened.

He was just a child after all.
