I have a confession to make.
After 30+ years of crafting, I have a bunch of supplies. Too many, in fact. Recently, I have been on a quest to:
1. buy less and craft more;
2. to shop my stash first;
3. to use basic supplies and tools in place of single-use supplies and tools; and
4. to create projects that most folks can create using what they have on hand.
It goes hand-in-hand with my personal resolutions to
1. avoid temptation (frequenting craft stores "just to browse", or watching other crafters' "haul only" videos that leads me to covetousness and overspending); and
2. to use the resources I already own; and to weed out single-use tools where I have another multi-purpose item that could be used instead.
Please do not misunderstand, this is NOT in judgment of anyone else, I just find in my heart that crafting purchases and desires can be an idol for me. And, I cannot serve two masters, so I must decide and follow the one I know I should, God.
Crafting, as all of our talents, needs to be kept in proper perspective as ways to touch people and spread His love to all. You may not have this issue, but for me, I can get swept up in the consumerism of the next "crafty shiny object", and have a bunch of unopened bags and packages piling up on my craft table.
Don't get me wrong, I will still buy some new items, I will just try to be more discerning and realistic about what I will actually use. Meanwhile, I am on a mission to clean out and pare down.
So, I will be creating two categories of videos, in addition to the straight tutorial type videos.
1. Back to Basics: will feature projects that can be created with just basic crafting tools and supplies. You can't be a paper crafter without something, and my basics include a pencil, ruler, scissors, adhesives (double-sided tape, double-sided foam, wet glue). To that, add paper, stickers, die cuts or other embellishments that can be purchased at discount and dollar stores, as well as sales and coupons at craft stores. The next item would be a scoring board and trimmer, also available at a discount in many places.
2. Try it and Treat it: I hope you guys like this one, because it is for you. I have many dies and supplies that I would like to showcase, but them give away. I get to use them for a tutorial, then the randomly selected winner would get the dies/supplies, and often the project as well. I get a video, you get proven tools/supplies, it seems like a win-win. Let me know what you think.
