"To begin with you have to find out who is 'The Seer'? 'The Seer,' subject, must be separate, different from what is seen, the object. Object is what is seen. 'The Seer' is, what is looking at the object, and you are not the object. Simply find out, "Who am I?" It's not a method, it's not a practice, it's not a sadhana. It can be done here, now, in this instant. Because Self is here. After all, what's Enlightenment? To know Thyself. To know 'Who I Am', this is called Enlightenment. This is called Wisdom, and this is Bliss. And this is Existence, and this is Being. And this is Truth. Truth is not located at a distance. Your own Self, through which you are searching Truth, through which you are searching Freedom, is not away from here. It is within you, nearer than your own breath, even behind the retina of your eyes, that you can't even see, you need not see outside even, it is behind the retina, through which the retina sees."
In this satsang from 6th November 1992, following his talk on the Seer and Self-Enquiry, Papaji addresses a vipassana meditator who wants to return to a state of no-mind. He tells her not to be affected by any events, ‘Whatever happens, never mind. If someone slaps you, never mind! If someone kisses you, never mind!’
He then asks a French woman who has written a beautiful poem to explain ‘the source of the unknown,’ the mystery beyond mystery.
A man with a lot of doubts comes up and Papaji scolds him for not honouring his declaration of freedom, “Don’t speak unless you are worthy of it.”
The last encounter is with a young man who asks Papaji whether it is ok to feel fear. Papaji gives a beautiful guidance about no difference between sleep state and dream state. When we wake up from this ‘reality’ we realise we are already free.
