Nigam Shah, MBBS, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Stanford School of Medicine; Chief Data Scientist, Stanford Health Care

Panelists:
Fatima Rodriguez, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Chief of Preventive Cardiology, Stanford School of Medicine

Alex Weihan Chu, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Stanford School of Medicine; Associate Chief Medical Officer, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley

Michael A. Pfeffer, MD, FACP, SVP, Chief Information and Digital Officer, and Associate Dean of Technology and Digital Solutions, Stanford Health Care and Stanford School of Medicine; Clinical Professor of Medicine, Stanford School of Medicine

In this panel discussion, Stanford Medicine experts cover various AI initiatives happening at Stanford Medicine with the goal of improving health care for patients and providers. Dr. Rodriguez talks about an initiative to use an AI model to analyze existing imaging data to find patients at risk of heart disease, and then deliver subsequent—and often lifesaving—preventive care. Dr. Chu gives an example of a machine-learning algorithm implemented at Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley to help predict a patient’s likelihood to decline in the next 18 hours. Dr. Pfeffer shares his excitement about the potential of AI, and discusses the findings from a Stanford Medicine study where an AI large language model was used to draft responses to patient messaging, with the goal of reducing health care providers’ workload and alleviating burnout.

Panelists also answer questions and engage in thoughtful conversations with the live audience, while discussing the imperative of privacy, security, and equity when working on AI initiatives. The session ends with panelists sharing their optimism about AI and the future of Medicine and Health Care, especially the technology’s potential in early disease detection, enabling true precision health that is tailored to each individual's medical history, leading to better outcome for patients.

Hosted in Dublin, CA, Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Medicine & Health Care Is Here brought together Stanford Medicine experts and the Tri-Valley community, for a live discussion on the transformative effects of AI on medicine and health care, with examples of how Stanford Medicine is using AI responsibly for the benefit of the Tri-Valley community and beyond.
