My first trip across the Atlantic was a 10-hour flight to Los Angeles on the “polar route”, which was still relatively new in 1986. Unlike today, the pilots made en route announcements about landmarks, including Reykjavík, Iceland, and Greenland. For most of the journey, we cruised at 29,000 feet. As the aircraft grew lighter from fuel burn, Pan Am's Boeing 747-121 Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7A turbofan engines, climbed to 33,000 feet over the Grand Canyon and onwards into California.
In-flight films were projected onto large screens on the cabin bulkheads. Audio came through hollow-tube headphones plugged into small sockets in the armrests, and the entertainment system also offered a choice of music channels. Top Gun was the main feature shown on both legs of the trip.
Before departure, I had read that one airline was offering passengers a complimentary glass of champagne. Sadly, when I walked up the aisle to look at the spiral staircase to the upper deck, the cabin crew told me this was not Pan Am...
